Oil Prices Fall for 2nd Day as Trump Signals Possible US-Iran Talks

Mumbai (IANS): Global oil prices declined for a second consecutive day on Wednesday as markets reacted to renewed hopes of diplomacy in the Middle East. Investor optimism grew after U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that negotiations to end the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran could resume within the next 48 hours, possibly in Pakistan.

This potential diplomatic breakthrough follows a tense weekend where Washington imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. That move, coupled with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, had initially sparked fears of severe global supply constraints.

Market Reaction: Crude Slips Below $95

As traders bet on a de-escalation of tensions, crude benchmarks retreated from their recent highs:

  • Brent Crude: The global benchmark slipped below the $95 per barrel mark. During Tuesday’s volatile session, Brent hit a low of $94.42 after peaking intraday at $99.45.

  • WTI Crude: U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) followed a similar path, dropping to $87.08 during the session after an opening near $98. It eventually stabilized around the $90 range.

Current Trading Levels (Wednesday Morning)

Benchmark Current Price Previous Close
Brent Crude $94.66 $95.13
WTI Crude $90.65 $91.28

Key Drivers of the Decline

Several factors pressured prices downward this week:

  1. Trump’s Diplomatic Cues: The President’s hint that “something could be happening” regarding Iran talks boosted market confidence.

  2. West Asia Negotiations: Reports suggest both Israel and Lebanon remain open to further negotiations, easing immediate fears of a wider regional war.

  3. Profit Taking: After crude approached $100 per barrel earlier in the week, investors liquidated positions as the threat of an immediate supply total-blackout dimmed.
