Nor’wester to Bring Rain Across Jharkhand and West Bengal

Storm Alerts Issued

Jamshedpur/Kolkata: After weeks of sweltering heat, a significant weather shift is set to bring much-needed relief to Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Meteorological Department on Saturday forecast Nor’wester storms and rainfall triggered by a moisture-heavy weather axis stretching from eastern Uttar Pradesh to southern Bangladesh, passing directly over Jharkhand.

Jharkhand in the Path of Relief

According to Met officials, the prevailing weather system—an axis 0.9 km above sea level combined with a cyclonic circulation over Uttar Pradesh—is drawing massive amounts of water vapor from the Bay of Bengal. This setup creates favorable conditions for thunderstorms across Jharkhand, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal starting this weekend. Residents in Jharkhand can expect a temperature drop of three to four degrees Celsius over the next five days as rain and gusty winds move in.

South Bengal & Kolkata Forecast

In West Bengal, stormy conditions are expected to begin in several southern districts starting Saturday evening.

  • Alerted Districts: North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram, and West Midnapore.

  • Kolkata: The city is likely to witness its first major Nor’wester relief on Sunday.

  • Wind Speeds: Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected, while districts like Hooghly and Bankura could see intensities reaching 60 kmph.

Orange Alert for North Bengal

While the south welcomes the rain, an Orange Alert remains in effect for North Bengal. Heavy rainfall is predicted for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, with these conditions expected to persist until next Friday.

Marine Warning

Fishermen have been advised to stay off the West Bengal and North Odisha coasts until Tuesday, as sea conditions will remain rough with wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph.
