Northern Town outhouse dwellers protest police highhandedness

Jamshedpur: The dwellers of various outhouses of Northern Town Area, Bistupur, today put up a demonstration at the Bistupur police station to demand a probe into alleged highhandedness shown by police in a theft case.

The protestors alleged that Bistupur police had arrested one Nimai Ravidas on fake charge of stealing jewelry worth Rs 12 lakh from the house of one Dr Sunil Kumar, a resident of Bistupur police station area. They said police had also accused Laxmi Das, wife of Nimai Ravidas, of involvement in the theft.

Police arrested Ravidas and sent him to jail after keeping him in police station lock up for three days. This is violation of law and human rights. They tortured the couple merely on the basis of an unfounded complaint lodged by the doctor. This is gross injustice as no evidence has yet been found regarding the involvement of the couple. Police are just trying to implicate an innocent man in the theft case at the behest of the doctor, said one of the protestors.

The theft reportedly took place on 15th May night when the said doctor was not at home. He had asked Laxmi Das to take care of the house. Laxmi Das alleged that she was beaten up badly by the police. She said she had met the senior superintendent of police, East Singhbhum, Amol Venukant Homkar, and demanded a probe into the incident.

The outhouse residents said the police should not act merely on doubts and complaints. Rather investigators should try to find out truth and evidence through probe instead of acting at the behest of complainants, they said.
