Petrol pump operators directed in road safety meeting
Jamshedpur: No helmet, no petrol — soon this slogan will not just be a warning board, but a rule strictly enforced across Jamshedpur. With this clear message, the district administration has stepped up its road safety drive, directing petrol pump operators to deny fuel to two-wheeler riders who arrive without helmets.
In a move to strengthen road safety and bring discipline among vehicle users, a meeting was convened with petrol pump operators under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi. The meeting, held jointly by the District Transport Office and Traffic Police, focused on the effective enforcement of the ‘No Helmet – No Petrol’ order across East Singhbhum district.
District Transport Officer (DTO) Dhananjay and Traffic DSP Neeraj Kumar chaired the meeting and issued clear instructions that two-wheeler riders without helmets should not be provided fuel at any petrol pump. Officials stressed that petrol pump operators play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with road safety rules, and their cooperation is essential for the success of the campaign.
The officers also underlined the importance of seat belt usage for both drivers and co-passengers in four-wheelers. “Just like helmets for bikers, seat belts are non-negotiable for car users. Every effort must be made to ensure their compulsory use,” the DTO said.
To strengthen monitoring and avoid confusion, petrol pump operators have been directed to put up prominent and easily visible sign boards inside their premises with messages such as ‘No Helmet – No Fuel’. The Traffic DSP emphasized that these signboards will serve as a constant reminder for vehicle users and also empower pump staff to refuse fuel service when rules are violated.
In addition to this, petrol pump operators were asked to install CCTV cameras at the entry and exit points of pumps. The Traffic DSP highlighted that video footage would help identify habitual offenders, and pump operators were requested to share details of rule-breaking vehicles with the authorities. “The cooperation of pump operators in providing data will help us take strict action against violators and make roads safer for everyone,” he said.
The meeting also addressed the wider objective of the road safety awareness campaign, which aims not just at enforcing rules but at creating a culture of responsible driving among citizens. Officials pointed out that accidents in the district can be significantly reduced if two key practices—wearing helmets and fastening seat belts—are followed with sincerity.
Motor Vehicle Inspector Suraj Hembram, members of the Road Safety Team, and representatives of petrol pumps from different parts of the district were present in the meeting. The officials urged all operators to work hand-in-hand with the administration in the larger public interest.
Concluding the session, DTO Dhananjay reiterated that the district administration is committed to reducing road accidents through preventive measures and strict enforcement. He said that the success of ‘No Helmet – No Petrol’ and seat belt enforcement would depend on collective responsibility and active participation from every stakeholder.
