No Helmet , No Petrol Campaign: Surprise inspection at four outlets at Bistupur

Jamshedpur : As part of No Helmet, No Petrol campaign, the district administration is conducting surprise inspection at the fuel refill outlets in city. On Monday, it conducted surprise inspections at four fuel refill outlets at Bistupur and prosecuted 20 traffic rules violators.

As a part of Road Safety Week , the petroleum outlets in steel city for the second consecutive day today refused fuel to helmetless riders. There were many two-wheeler riders who were refused the fuel at the petroleum outlets in Bistupur and other places in the city. All the 36 retail fuel outlets officials have been directed by East Singhbhum DTO Sanjay Kujur, Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) Awadesh Kumar and Jamshedpur traffic DSP Jacinta Kerketta to follow the orders.

On Saturday, separate teams led by district transport officer, Sanjay Kujur and Motor Vehicle Inspector( MVI) Awdesh Kumar Singh conducted surprise inspections in petroleum outlets at Sakchi and Bistupur and charged spot fines from those not abiding by the diktat.

The Police has made mandatory for petrol pumps not to sell petrol to two-wheeler riders without helmets and drunk four-wheeler drivers. But people of Jamshedpur especially youngsters are not happy with the decision of police to enforce ‘no helmet, no petrol’ policy. According to them, police never enforced traffic rules strictly but now they are passing the onus on petrol pump owners. The officials recently said that petrol pump owners have been told not to sell fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmet and drunk four-wheeler drivers.

Traffic police officials said since they began their enforcement drive in the city, most commuters have begun following the rules. “There are only a few people who are still not using helmets. We’ll call a meeting with petrol pump officials to co-operate in the enforcement,” said an official.

Petrol pump officials said the district administration should provide security, as refusing fuel often leads to verbal abuse and attack. Jamshedpur accounts for the highest number of road mishaps involving two wheelers in the state. Sources say the move has also been set rolling keeping in mind the onset of winters, when frequent dense fogs lead to road accidents.
