Jamshedpur: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken a firm stance against 115 medical colleges across India for failing to provide information regarding the stipend or honorarium for undergraduate interns, postgraduate residents, and senior residents, as well as post-graduate students at super specialty institutes. Among the affected institutions are four medical colleges in Jharkhand: MGM Medical College, Dumka Medical College, Palamu Medical College, and Hazaribagh Medical College.

The NMC, through a letter from Secretary Dr. B. Srinivas, has issued show cause notices to these colleges, asking them to explain why the required details about the stipend for the financial year 2023-24 were not provided. The commission has given the institutions three days to respond with the requested information.

The letter, sent on November 28, also directs the colleges to update their information for the year 2024-25 and submit this data by the 5th of every month. Furthermore, the colleges have been asked to provide annual updates by the end of the year. The NMC has stated that if no response is received, appropriate action will be taken against the non-compliant institutions.

This move by the NMC highlights the importance of transparency regarding stipend payments, which have been a longstanding issue in many medical colleges across the country. The NMC’s decision to issue show cause notices is seen as a step towards ensuring that medical students receive their due financial support during their internships and residency programs.
