NIT Jamshedpur Breakthrough: Researchers Develop Eco-Friendly Tech for Net-Zero Power Plants

Jamshedpur: In a major step towards sustainable industrial development, researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur have achieved a significant breakthrough in green power plant technology that could substantially improve Air Quality Index (AQI) levels.

The pioneering research explores the application of Pre-Combustion Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology, a process that would enable power plant chimneys to emit only steam, thereby ensuring zero carbon dioxide emissions.

This innovation holds immense promise for enhancing efficiency and productivity in energy-intensive sectors, particularly the power industry, while delivering direct environmental benefits to society.

The research findings were presented recently and led to the recommendation of a PhD degree for the researcher, Md. Wasim Akram, a resident of Jugsalai, Jamshedpur, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIT Jamshedpur.

The recommendation was made by Dr. S. P. S. Rajput, distinguished HAG Professor from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal, who reviewed the work.

Wasim Akram conducted the research under the expert guidance of Professor Sanjay and Dr. M. A. Hassan. Their collaborative efforts have already resulted in the publication of three research papers in reputed international journals, highlighting the novelty and global relevance of the work.

Congratulating the researcher and his supervisors, Prof. Goutam Sutradhar, Director of NIT Jamshedpur, emphasized the broader impact of the study. He noted that such research could play a crucial role in advancing India’s Green Circular Economy, contributing meaningfully towards the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat–2047’.

Dr. Parmanand Kumar, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, also lauded Wasim’s work in this cutting-edge domain. He highlighted that the captured CO₂ could be converted into valuable industrial products, generating revenue while simultaneously improving air quality and benefiting society at large.

Reinforcing this perspective, Prof. M. K. Sinha, Dean (Academic) at NIT Jamshedpur, encouraged Wasim to continue his contributions in the critical field of Circular Economy, particularly through CCS technologies.

He underscored the importance of such research for India’s future energy security and environmental sustainability.

This achievement places NIT Jamshedpur at the forefront of green technology innovation, offering industries a practical pathway to reduce carbon emissions, improve operational efficiency, and move towards a more sustainable future.
