Jamshedpur, April 27: Narbheram Hansraj English School (NHES) brought to life the rich cultural heritage of India through an evocative stage performance of “Myths and Morality,” a play inspired by the epic Mahabharata. The play, staged on Saturday at the Kusum Kamani Auditorium, aimed to highlight the transformative values embedded in the Mahabharata’s stories, offering a deep exploration of the moral dilemmas and sacrifices faced by its characters.
The performance began with the powerful tale of Dronacharya, the master archer and royal guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas, and Eklavya, a young prince of the Nishada tribe. Despite being rejected by Dronacharya due to his lowly caste, Eklavya’s unwavering dedication and self-taught skills led him to surpass the abilities of Dronacharya’s pupils. In a shocking turn, Dronacharya, fearing Eklavya’s potential to outshine his favored pupil Arjuna, demanded Eklavya’s thumb as a fee for his tutelage, thereby crippling the young archer’s future. Eklavya, demonstrating unmatched devotion and respect for his guru, sacrificed his thumb, showcasing the extraordinary power of sacrifice and loyalty.

The play then shifted to the Swayamvara of Draupadi, where Arjuna, using his exceptional archery skills, won Draupadi’s hand in marriage by striking the eye of a fish while it spun on a rotating wheel. His flawless execution highlighted the value of focus, concentration, and rigorous training—traits that ultimately shaped his journey and the events of the Mahabharata. Draupadi’s marriage to Arjuna played a crucial role in the epic, setting the stage for the complexities of duty, loyalty, and family dynamics that would unfold.
The most pivotal part of the play delved into the infamous dice game between Yudhishthira, the righteous king of the Pandavas, and Shakuni, the manipulative uncle of the Kauravas. This fateful game of chance led to the Pandavas’ exile, plunging them into a world of suffering and hardship. The game set in motion the inevitable war of Kurukshetra, altering the trajectory of the Mahabharata.
The play also featured the legendary bravery of Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna and Subhadra, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kurukshetra War. In the Chakravyuha formation, Abhimanyu fought valiantly against overwhelming odds, exemplifying courage, valor, and selflessness. His story remains one of the most poignant in the Mahabharata, inspiring generations.
Another key moment portrayed the philosophical dialogue from the Bhagavad Gita, where Lord Krishna imparts timeless wisdom to Arjuna on the eve of battle. As Arjuna faces his moral dilemma about fighting against his kin, Krishna’s teachings on duty, righteousness, and detachment resonate through the ages, offering deep insights into life and the nature of existence.
The play culminated with the poignant martyrdom of Bhishma, the grandsire of the Kurus, whose fall on the tenth day of the Kurukshetra War symbolizes unwavering commitment to duty, selfless sacrifice, and the power of dharma. Bhishma’s plea for peace (Shanti) reverberated across time, leaving the audience with a profound sense of the epic’s moral and spiritual depth.
The event was conceptualized by the Principal of NHES, with choreography by Tr. Jarita Roy, music coordinated by Tr. Ravikant and Tr. Surabhi Banerjee, and props and stage decoration managed by Tr. Mahesh and Tr. Bhaskar. The Chief Guest for the evening was Ananya Mittal, Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum, who praised the students and teachers for their exceptional performance. Nakul Kamani, President of Narbheram Hansraj English School, who played a key role in initiating the program, along with members of the managing committee and other esteemed guests, lauded the efforts of everyone involved in making the play a success.
The play was a powerful reminder of the Mahabharata’s timeless lessons on duty, morality, sacrifice, and the eternal battle between good and evil, offering a thought-provoking experience for all those in attendance.
