Jamshedpur, May 11: A tragic incident at MGM Hospital has sparked outrage after a newborn allegedly died shortly after receiving a BCG vaccination, prompting the family to accuse hospital staff of medical negligence and demand a high-level investigation into the matter.
According to the family, Umesh Kumar Ravani, a resident of Gurudwara Road in Mango, and his wife were blessed with a baby boy on May 9 at MGM Hospital. The delivery was normal, and both mother and child were reportedly healthy. Following medical observation, doctors discharged them the next day and instructed the family to bring the infant back on Monday for the mandatory BCG vaccine.

Acting on the doctors’ advice, the couple returned to the hospital on Monday morning around 11:30 am, where the newborn was administered the vaccine. Family members alleged that immediately after receiving the shot, the baby appeared unusually lethargic. Assuming it was a temporary reaction to the vaccination, they took the child home. However, within a short time, the infant’s hands and feet reportedly turned blue, triggering panic among the family.
The distraught parents rushed the baby back to MGM Hospital, where doctors examined the child and informed them that the newborn had already passed away.
The sudden death plunged the family into shock and grief, leading to emotional scenes and protests at the hospital premises. The family has filed a written complaint with the concerned police station, alleging negligence and seeking accountability.
On receiving information about the incident, BJP leader Vikas Singh reached MGM Hospital and met the grieving family. Calling the case “highly suspicious,” Singh demanded an immediate and impartial inquiry by the Jharkhand Health Secretary. He also urged strict action against any doctor or nurse found responsible for negligence.
“The circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death are deeply concerning. A thorough investigation must be conducted, and those found guilty should face stringent action,” Singh said. He further stated that he would soon accompany the victim’s family to meet the Jharkhand Health Secretary and the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner to formally demand a high-level probe into the matter.
The incident has raised serious questions about patient safety and medical protocols at MGM Hospital, with the bereaved family now awaiting justice.
