New Delhi (IANS): The National Cadet Corps (NCC) Headquarters Directorate General has approved the creation of independent state directorates for Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh, an official from the Ministry of Defence announced on Monday.
The addition of these two new units expands the total number of NCC state directorates across India from 17 to 19.
Boosting Youth Outreach and Local Infrastructure
According to the Defence Ministry, the decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of youth empowerment, aimed at molding young citizens into socially committed leaders capable of contributing to national progress.
The establishment of these standalone administrative structures is expected to deliver significant structural benefits:
-
Localized Support: The move brings the NCC closer to the local cadets and educational institutions it serves in Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh.
-
Enhanced Operations: The new administrative setups will streamline coordination, improve ground supervision, and enhance support for training and developmental activities.
-
Better Infrastructure: Youth in both states will benefit from upgraded training facilities and improved local support mechanisms.
Exponential Growth of the World’s Largest Youth Organisation
Founded in 1948 with an initial enrollment of just 20,000 cadets, the NCC has grown exponentially into the world’s largest uniformed youth organization, boasting over 20 lakh cadets across more than 750 districts. The organization expanded rapidly in recent years, adding 6 lakh cadets to its ranks between 2014 and 2025.
Highlighting the critical role of the corps, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh previously described NCC cadets as the nation’s “second line of defence.” Pointing to their vital public awareness efforts during nationwide mock drills under Operation Sindoor, Singh emphasized the need for readiness in modern times.
“As the world is going through a period of uncertainty, our youth must remain physically, mentally and emotionally strong and be prepared to take on every challenge,” Singh stated while addressing cadets at the NCC Republic Day Camp in Delhi.
