National conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics begins at IIT ISM Dhanbad

Dhanbad, Jan 9: 24th National Conference on Atomic and Molecular Physics (NCAMP 2025) began at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad.

The four-day event is being organized by the Indian Society of Atomic and Molecular Physics (ISAMP) in collaboration with the Department of Physics IIT (ISM). Over 200 delegates from more than 100 institutes across India and abroad are participating in it.

Prof. Sukumar Mishra, director of IIT (ISM) inaugurated the conference. Bhas Bhapat from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune was guest of honour.

Organizer said the conference aims to foster meaningful scientific interaction and knowledge sharing among students, early-career researchers, and established scientists in the atomic, molecular, and optical physics community.

Besides discussions, participants will showcase their research and stay updated on emerging theoretical and experimental advancements.

While addressing Prof. Mishra said that science, technology and policy must synchronize for meaningful outcomes. “Fundamental ideation begins with basic science, matures into technology and ultimately transforms ideas into products, driving economic growth when integrated into policy,” he said.

Bhas Bhapat said a focus on spectroscopy and collisions has expanded into diverse fields, including quantum technologies. It’s fitting that we celebrate the Golden Jubilee of ISAMP alongside 100 years of quantum theory, which traces its roots to observations in atomic physics.

Prof. Bobby Antony, head of the department of Physics at IIT (ISM), outlined scientific program of NCAMP 2025.

The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. P.M. Sarun proposed vote of than thanks.

NCAMP 2025 also marks the Golden Jubilee of the Indian Society of Atomic and Molecular Physics, which was established in 1976. A special session this afternoon will commemorate this milestone, along with an election to constitute the society’s new committee.
