Jamshedpur: A three-member National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team,visited Karim City College, Sakchi and its B.Ed College in Mango as part of their two-day tour to grade the cradles.
The team was led by former vice chancellor of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University Ratan Lal Godara.Other members include professor of chemistry from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, Y.V. Reddy and former principal of Union Christian College and advisor to Meghalaya Samuel R. Lyndem.
The team visited interacted with the principal Mohammad Zakaria followed by inspection of facilities available at the campus. They verifiedteachers’ qualification, interacted with students, alumni members, parents, teachers and the non-teaching staff on the first day.
Alumni members also shared their views where the major concern was lack of practical knowledge to students. The college after it was last assessed has developed its infrastructure along with other innovation. The college was tagged ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ by UGC in 2009.
NAAC is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to assess and accredit institutions of higher education. NAAC mainly assesses the quality of education. The quality of an institution is analysed in terms of its performance, related to the educational processes, teaching-learning, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, governance, financial well being, student services and others.
According to the University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, only NAAC-accredited colleges could receive the development funds. The University Grants Commission (UGC), ministry of human resource development and the state government allot the funds to the colleges based on the NAAC assessment.
The team began their inspection by visiting the vocational departments of information technology, computer application and maintenance. They took stock of different aspects relating to teaching quality and infrastructure at the college, and visited individual departments, examination centre and library.
Team members also interacted with the faculty, students, technical assistants, parents and alumni. Before leaving the college premises, they also addressed the teachers and staff members at a meeting.
On being asked about the parameters of assessment, one of the members of peer team said: �The NAAC has several point uniform scale for the assessment which includes syllabi, teaching quality, teachers� qualification, their achievements in terms of research and their participation in different national or international workshops.�
Infrastructure, students� performance, administrative management leadership and ceratin unique features are also considered, he said. However, he refused to comment about the team�s assessment of the college.
