Jamtara Cyber-Fraudster Arrested for Targeting Bombay HC Judge

Mumbai: Mumbai Police arrested a 25-year-old Jamtara man on Saturday for defrauding a Bombay High Court judge of ₹6.02 lakh. Following a phishing-app scam that siphoned the funds, the Cuffe Parade Police tracked the suspect to Jharkhand.

The Arrest and Criminal Network

The police identified the accused as Mazhar Alam Israil Miyan, a resident of Jamtara. Working alongside the Jamtara Cyber Cell and Karmatand Police, Mumbai investigators took Miyan into custody.

Evidence suggests Miyan operates as a key player in a massive cybercrime network; investigators have already linked him to 36 cases across 10 different states.

Anatomy of the Reward Point Scam

The fraud began on February 28 when the judge attempted to redeem credit card reward points. The sequence of events highlights the calculated tactics used by the syndicate:

  • The Trap: When the judge could not reach official bank channels, he searched online and inadvertently dialed a fake helpline number planted by the fraudsters.

  • The Phishing App: Posing as customer care executives, the scammers sent a WhatsApp link for an 18 MB application.

  • Device Manipulation: When the app failed to open on the judge’s iPhone, the fraudsters convinced him to switch to an Android device.

  • The Theft: Following their instructions, the judge inserted his SIM card into his domestic help’s Android phone and downloaded the app. Once he entered his credit card details, the criminals immediately transferred nearly ₹6 lakh from his account.

A Growing Digital Threat

The judge reported the fraud immediately, allowing police to apprehend Miyan after a 10-day investigation.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the rising tide of cyber fraud. From spear-phishing to ransomware, these attacks bypass technical security by targeting human psychology. Despite advanced defense systems, it only takes one moment of misplaced trust—such as downloading an unverified APK file—to enable a devastating financial strike.
