Ranchi: Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has once again emerged as highest individual income taxpayer in Bihar-Jharkhand region. Information was shared by Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Dr D Sudhakar Rao during a press conference in Ranchi.
Announcement came during a key meeting of Income Tax officials from Bihar and Jharkhand held at Radisson Blu Hotel regarding implementation of India’s new Income Tax Act. More than 100 officials from both states attended the meeting chaired by Dr Rao. Discussions focused on smooth implementation of new tax law scheduled to come into effect from April 1, 2026, along with taxpayer facilities and awareness measures.
Dr Rao said the new Income Tax Act has been designed to be simpler and more structured compared to existing law. He added that the department is working to ensure taxpayers in Bihar and Jharkhand do not face difficulties during the transition phase and can easily adapt to new provisions. Training sessions and guidelines are also being provided to officials for effective implementation.
He further stated that Bihar and Jharkhand together achieved income tax collection targets for the financial year 2025-26. Combined tax collection from both states stood at Rs 20,000 crore, including around Rs 12,000 crore from Jharkhand and Rs 8,000 crore from Bihar.
According to department data, nearly 40 lakh people from Bihar and Jharkhand filed income tax returns during the previous financial year. Officials said focus in coming years would remain on expanding the tax base and making the return filing process easier for taxpayers.
