Jamshedpur: The southwest monsoon is in its final retreat across eastern and central India, marking the close of this year’s rainy season.
Jharkhand is poised to bid adieu to the monsoon within the next couple of days, ushering in a spell of clear skies, dry air, and gradually rising daytime temperatures.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon currently extends through 18.5°N/72°E, Alibag, Ahilyanagar, Akola, Jabalpur, Varanasi, Raxaul, and 28°N/86°E.
Conditions, the IMD said, are now favourable for further withdrawal from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, along with the entire Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, and parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, and Telangana over the next two or three days.
Forecast for Jharkhand
Oct 12–14: Predominantly clear skies with dry weather across the state, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Palamu.
Meteorologists predict a 2–3°C rise in maximum temperatures due to increased solar radiation as cloud cover thins.
Mornings and nights, however, are expected to turn cooler and more comfortable, signalling the onset of the post-monsoon transition.
Synoptic Situation
A Western Disturbance is currently seen as a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and adjoining areas at about 3.1 Km above mean sea level, accompanied by a trough aloft in the mid-tropospheric westerlies along longitude 75°E north of latitude 30°N.
In addition, another cyclonic circulation persists over south Bangladesh and adjoining north Bay of Bengal between 1.5 and 5.8 Km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height.
This system, however, is expected to weaken gradually, allowing dry northwesterly winds to dominate Jharkhand’s atmosphere.
Monsoon activity over Jharkhand remained subdued in the past 48- hours, with light to moderate showers recorded at a few isolated locations such as East Singhbhum, Simdega, and Latehar.
Most parts of the state experienced dry conditions and intermittent cloudiness.
As the monsoon withdraws completely, clear skies, low humidity, and stable weather patterns will prevail across the region through mid-October.
The retreat of the monsoon marks the beginning of the post-monsoon or transition season, typically characterized by bright days, pleasant evenings, and the first hints of autumn in Jharkhand’s air.
