Jamshedpur, July 14: A parched Kolhan soaked in heavy showers in the past 24 hours, thanks to a well-marked low pressure over south Odisha and north Andhra coast. The widespread rainfall across the state helped bring down the rain deficit to 40 per cent, a fall of seven percent.
Several areas, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Daltonganj, recorded more than 50mm of rainfall. The local meteorological office in Jamshedpur recorded 30 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours while the state capital received 50.1mm.
The rain-o-meter at other places like Tenughat, Konner, Massanjore, Ramgarh, Putki and Khesiary read 40mm. Bokaro, Dhanbad and Hazaribagh received less than 10mm of rain.
“A low pressure that developed over south Odisha and north Andhra coast caused the rain. The low pressure started weakening from this morning and is slowly moving towards Madhya Pradesh,” said an official.
In its 24-hour forecast, the Met office has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places across Jharkhand. Ranchi, Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas experienced intermittent rainfall early this morning.
A subdued monsoon had raised Jharkhand’s average rainfall deficit to a high 51 per cent. Against a normal average of 1,015.9mm, the state has so far recorded 595.5mm of rainfall since monsoon set in, bringing down the deficit to 40 per cent.
Jamshedpur received 779.6mm of rain last monsoon. This year’s figure on the monsoon meter is 445.5mm so far. Ranchi is fairly placed as it has received 950.2mm of rain till now while Daltonganj has registered 592.8mm.
“The situation has improved as most places, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Daltonganj, Koderma, Dhanbad and Hazaribagh, witnessed a good spell of showers. Ranchi received over 300mm of
rainfall in the last week while Daltonganj recorded 190mm. This has helped reduce the rain deficit,” said a senior weather analyst.
According to him, the withdrawal phase of monsoon would also result in widespread showers across the state.
