Jamshedpur, June 22: In a landmark achievement for government healthcare in the Kolhan region, MGM Hospital has successfully performed its first-ever arthroscopic knee surgery, marking the formal introduction of minimally invasive orthopaedic procedures at the institution.
The complex surgery was carried out under the leadership of Orthopaedics Department Head Dr. Y. Sanga.
The patient, 33-year-old Neelam Kumari, had been suffering from persistent knee pain and severe difficulty in bending her leg for a prolonged period.
As her condition worsened, she was admitted to the Orthopaedics Department of MGM Hospital on June 16.
Following a detailed clinical evaluation, doctors advised an MRI scan, which revealed the presence of a ganglion cyst lodged between the knee ligaments. The cyst was identified as the primary cause of pain and restricted movement. A specialised medical team was subsequently constituted, and the surgery was performed on June 17 in Unit-III under the supervision of Unit Head and Assistant Professor Dr. Mrityunjay Kumar. Senior doctors Dr. Shubhajit Haldar and Dr. Ratnajit Chakravarty played key roles in the procedure.
Using advanced arthroscopic technology, surgeons made tiny keyhole incisions and inserted a specialised camera and instruments into the knee joint. The ganglion cyst was removed with precision without causing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. The operation was completed successfully without any complications.
Doctors reported that the patient has experienced complete relief from pain and has regained normal knee movement. Compared to conventional open surgery, arthroscopy involves minimal blood loss, reduced post-operative discomfort, and significantly faster recovery.
Medical experts described the introduction of arthroscopic surgery at MGM Hospital as a major boon for economically weaker patients, who previously had to depend on costly private healthcare facilities for such procedures. Notably, the surgery was performed free of cost at the government hospital.
Meanwhile, MGM Medical College Principal Dr. Sanjay Kumar has directed all department heads to ensure the timely attendance of doctors and staff in both shifts. He warned that strict action would be taken against employees found absent from their designated duties during inspections. The administration has also mandated biometric attendance and adherence to prescribed dress codes.
