Jamshedpur: In a significant move to expand its capacity, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur has formally applied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for an increase in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats for the upcoming 2025-26 academic session. Currently, MGMMCH is approved to offer 100 MBBS and 45 PG seats, but with growing demand for medical education, the institution is seeking to raise these numbers to accommodate more students.
The medical college has requested an additional 50 MBBS seats, bringing the total to 150, along with an increase of six PG seats, which would raise the total PG capacity to 51. This expansion is expected to focus primarily on the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM) and the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT) departments.
An official from the institution confirmed the application, explaining that the move was driven by the increasing demand for medical education at MGMMCH, which has established itself as one of the leading medical institutions not only in Jamshedpur but across Jharkhand and neighboring states. The official also acknowledged the ongoing challenge of faculty shortages but reassured that the medical college is well-equipped to manage the additional students.
“The growing demand for seats at MGMMCH is a reflection of the institution’s rising stature. We are aware of the current faculty shortage, but we are confident that we can accommodate additional students in both the MBBS and PG programs,” the official stated.
MGMMCH, which has been a prominent medical college in the region, continues to draw a significant number of applicants due to its reputation for quality education, infrastructure, and clinical training. With the application for additional seats, the college is not only aiming to address the educational needs of the region but also to contribute to the increasing shortage of healthcare professionals in the state.
The increase in seats is expected to benefit a large number of students aspiring to enter the medical field, particularly in Jharkhand, where access to quality medical education has been limited. This move aligns with the state government’s efforts to improve healthcare education and infrastructure, which is critical for meeting the medical needs of the population.
“ If approved, the expansion of seats will also help in mitigating the pressure on existing medical colleges, providing more opportunities for aspiring doctors to pursue their education without the need to move out of the state. The approval from NMC is eagerly awaited, and the management at MGMMCH is hopeful that it will pave the way for a brighter future for medical students in Jharkhand,” said the official.
