Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital Jamshedpur gets OT

Jamshedpur, March 3: Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH) on Monday opened a dedicated Operation Theatre Complex in its existing building.

The Operation Theatre is the pre-requisite for starting in-house cancer surgery at MTMH (scheduled for April 2025). A long-felt need, this will ensure that patients requiring cancer surgery do not need to go elsewhere for the service. In particular, patients undergoing treatment under the Ayushman and Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Yojana will benefit from in-sourcing surgery at MTMH.

The modular OT has been constructed as per NABH guidelines and has the latest equipment.

The OT was inaugurated by Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel. It is named as the Golden Jubilee Operation Theatre Complex, and is part of the various initiatives taken up by MTMH in its Golden Jubilee Year celebration.

Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH), a trust hospital at Jamshedpur was established in 1975 to cater to cancer patients of this region. It is named after Lady Meherbai Tata, wife of Sir Dorabji Jamshedji Tata. In 2017, Tata Trusts approved a project to upgrade MTMH from a 72- bedded cancer hospital to a comprehensive 131- bedded cancer care facility through investment in civil infrastructure and equipment. It is an NABH (entry-level) accredited hospital, and has an NABH accredited laboratory services.

MTMH now offers comprehensive cancer care facility, including Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Palliative Care and advanced diagnostic facilities (CT, MRI, PET-CT). Image guided biopsies, not done anywhere else in Jamshedpur, are routinely carried out at MTMH. The infrastructure includes a Day Care chemotherapy ward, Pritpal Palliative Care Centre (funded by Suri Foundation), well- equipped general wards and cabins and a 4-bedded intensive care unit. Besides routine tests, the laboratory services carry out advanced tests such as immunohistochemistry and oncomolecular PCR. 

In addition, a state- of-the- art True Beam radiotherapy machine helps to treat patients with the most advanced and precise radiation therapy.

MTMH accepts patients under the PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat) scheme. Many patients are also supported through Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Yojana. The hospital accepts patients with medical insurance. Besides these, corporates and individuals support poor patients through generous donations (Indian Cancer Society, KMCO Trust, Suri Seva Foundation, JCAPCPL to name a few). The endeavour of MTMH is to ensure that no cancer patient suffers due to lack of funds, and it is able to do so because of the immense support from citizens of Jamshedpur.
