Chaibasa, Oct 12: Maoist activities have resurfaced in the dense Saranda forests of West Singhbhum, raising concerns for both residents and authorities. During the so-called “Week of Revenge” from October 8 to 14, around 20 armed Maoists attacked an Airtel mobile tower in Kolbhonga village, under the jurisdiction of Jaraikela police station, late Saturday night.
According to local sources, the Maoists broke through the tower’s perimeter and poured petrol on the genset and control unit, setting it ablaze. Within minutes, the equipment was completely destroyed. Following the attack, the Maoists reportedly shouted slogans to assert their continued influence in the Saranda area.
Officials suggest the attack was intended to disrupt the communication network used by security forces, potentially hindering surveillance and operational coordination.
Police and a joint CRPF team were immediately dispatched to the scene upon receiving information about the incident. “We are conducting a thorough search operation in the entire area to ensure security and prevent further incidents,” said a senior police officer.
Local villagers expressed alarm at the resurgence of Maoist activities. “These attacks not only threaten government property but also put the safety of residents at risk. We urge authorities to increase patrols in the region,” said a Kolbhonga resident. The search operation is ongoing and authorities remain on high alert.
