Mango Mayor opts for austerity, returns official perks

Jamshedpur, April 6: In a strong statement of intent prioritising public welfare over privilege, Mango Municipal Corporation Mayor Sudha Gupta has announced a sweeping set of austerity measures, voluntarily relinquishing official benefits and directing a more responsible use of public resources.
Soon after assuming office, Gupta ordered the immediate return of all government vehicles allotted to her, stating that she would carry out official duties using her personal vehicle.
Emphasising service over entitlement, she also declined the honorarium associated with the mayoral post, directing that the amount be deposited into the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support those in need.
The Mayor further instructed that no special arrangements be made for her office, advocating for a simple and functional workspace without any additional expenditure.
She called for a strict curb on unnecessary spending, asserting that taxpayers’ money must be utilised solely for developmental work and addressing citizens’ concerns, not for showmanship or avoidable luxuries.
In a symbolic shift towards simplicity and sustainability, Gupta also abolished the practice of presenting bouquets at official events, suggesting instead the gifting of plants or books.
She directed that all municipal programmes be conducted in a modest manner, free from extravagance.
Reiterating her commitment to public service, Gupta urged all officials and employees to align with this vision and ensure that governance remains transparent, accountable, and focused on the needs of the people.
In a further gesture underlining her principles, the Mayor is learnt to have personally borne expenses for her working days, reinforcing her message that public office is a platform for service, not privilege.
