Seraikela, April 10: In 1937, a special performance of Seraikela Chhau dance was arranged for Mahatma Gandhi during his stay at the residence of Sarat Chandra Bose, brother of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The request for the performance was made by Maharaja Aditya Pratap Singh Deo and Kumar Bijay Pratap Singh Deo of Seraikela.
The recital took place on the open terrace of Sarat Bose’s house. Though Gandhiji was delayed due to important political discussions with delegates that evening, Maharaj Ji insisted that the show must go on upon Gandhi’s return.
After his evening prayer, a selection of the finest Chhau dances was performed. At the end of the performance, Gandhiji shared a brief remark with Prince Suvendra Narayan Singh Deo, who had performed the Mayur Nritya (Peacock Dance). His simple words, “You dance beautifully,” spoke volumes about his appreciation for the traditional art form and the sincerity of the performance.
