Ranchi: The political landscape in Khunti, Jharkhand, is witnessing a resurgence as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reposes its trust in the candidature of Union Minister Arjun Munda for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The legacy of Neelkanth Singh Munda, a five-time MLA from Khunti, intermittently surfaces in BJP’s political discourse regarding this pivotal constituency.
The last Lok Sabha election in Khunti was nothing short of a nail-biting spectacle, with each vote being meticulously counted. In the face of a fierce contest, Arjun Munda emerged victorious by a slender margin of just 1445 votes against Congress candidate Kalicharan Munda. The BJP successfully navigated the challenges posed on this seat, marking a significant win.
Historically, Khunti was under the dominance of the Jharkhand Party until 1980. However, the BJP, with the support of its stalwart leader Kadiya Munda, wrested control over this seat. Kadiya Munda established such formidable political influence in 1989 that the BJP has continued to reap electoral dividends in Khunti ever since. Winning the seat seven times until 2014, Kadiya’s political sway posed a formidable challenge for any opposing party.
While the lotus may not have bloomed on every seat in the Lok Sabha elections, Kadiya ensured its perennial presence in Khunti. Presently, the BJP places its unwavering trust solely in the candidature of Union Minister Arjun Munda for Khunti. Minister Munda is actively involved in the area’s development, maintaining direct communication with Khunti’s workers and supporters. Despite his ministerial commitments, he remains vigilant about addressing every issue confronting the region, skillfully navigating the political landscape in Khunti.
