Jamshedpur: Students and teachers of Loyola School, Jamshedpur gathered at Jesu Bhavan, Mango, for the groundbreaking ceremony of a new Tarumitra Centre, marking a significant step towards fostering ecological sensitivity and environmental stewardship among youth.

Tarumitra, a nationwide students’ movement dedicated to promoting ecological awareness in India, will now have a dedicated centre in Jamshedpur to educate students on biodiversity, sustainability, and the responsibility of caring for the planet.

The ceremony was graced by Father Jerry Cutinha, Provincial of Jamshedpur; Father Michael Thanaraj, Rector of Loyola School; Father Ajit Soren, Superior of Jesu Bhavan; and Father Vinod Fernandes, Principal of Loyola School, Bistupur, alongwith other dignitaries, and members of the Loyola Alumni Association.

The programme began with a prayer song, followed by a traditional coconut-breaking ceremony symbolizing prosperity and harmony.

In his welcome address, Father Michael Thanaraj highlighted the need to protect “our common home,” reminding everyone that humanity must act as caretakers of the Earth for future generations.

Father Jerry Cutinha blessed the ground with a short prayer, invoking divine grace upon all who will contribute to the project.

He reflected on the Ignatian vision that “God’s glory is revealed in all of His creations,” stating that the centre would serve ad majorem Dei gloriam — for the greater glory of God.

To mark the occasion, 20 saplings of different fruit-bearing trees were planted by the students and Fathers, symbolizing growth, renewal, and commitment to environmental preservation.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Father Vinod Fernandes, expressing gratitude to all participants and reaffirming the school’s dedication to sustainability.

The establishment of the Tarumitra Centre marks the beginning of a new chapter in Loyola School’s efforts to nurture ecological consciousness and inspire students to protect and cherish the environment.
