Jamshedpur: A major accident was narrowly averted on Wednesday morning when a runaway freight train crashed into another stationary goods train at Adityapur railway yard close to Sharma Basti.
The incident occurred around 9.45 a.m., causing extensive damage but no casualties.
Eyewitnesses said the unmanned train, reportedly moving without an engine, broke through the yard’s boundary wall before ramming into the parked rake.
The collision was so forceful that several wagons derailed and piled up, sparking chaos among workers and locals.
Several labourers who were unloading goods and inspecting the line managed to escape just in time.
Locals rushed to the site and informed railway officials, who arrived soon after along with technical teams to assess and clear the wreckage.
Initial reports point to a possible brake failure or operational error.
Train movement in the area was briefly disrupted but later restored. A detailed probe has been ordered to determine the exact cause and fix responsibility.
Railway officials expressed relief that despite the severe impact, no lives were lost in what could have been a catastrophic accident.
