Loot in Jugsalai: Police identify criminals with the help of CCTV

Jamshedpur: The district police have succeeded in identifying the faces of the two bike-borne criminals who snatched Rs 2.75 lakh from a Kolkata-based trader in Jugsalai on Sunday evening. The criminals who committed the crime were riding a bike.

Officer-in-charge of Jugsalai police station Ashok Giri said for identifying the looters, they have taken help of CCTV cameras installed at strategic locations on the Jugsalai-Station Road besides the statement made by the victim.

The two bike-borne criminals snatched a bag containing Rs 2.75 lakh from the trader Bhola Agrawal while he was standing near a floor mill on Jugsalai-Station Road under Jugsalai police station area. He was attacked while he was waiting for an auto-rickshaw on Jugsalai-Station Road for Tatanagar station.

Police suspect that the trader was being closely followed by the criminals as the victim had been Kadma, Bistupur and finally Jugsalai for collection of his dues from retailers.

Giri, who is also inspector of Jugsalai-Bagbera-Parsudih police circle said that a new gang of looters has emerged in the steel city.

Notably, earlier on April 11 evening also two bike-borne criminals had snatched a brief-case of an Amritsar-based trader by opening fire at Jugsalai.

“There has been a spurt in petty crimes in the city. We have been successful in arresting quite a few thieves involved in the reported cases but I think there is a need to ensure proper night watch. We are planning to increase the movement of mobile police and vigil,” said police official.

Meanwhile, break-in in shops, thefts from scooter or motorcycle carriers and pick pocketing are at an all time high. Apart from such crimes, a number of residential complexes have also witnessed a spate of robberies.

Besides increasing population, police attribute the steep increase in the incidence of robberies to chain snatching cases. The steady rise in the price of gold led to a corresponding increase in chain snatching incidents.

Earlier chain snatchings were recorded as theft in the First Information Report (FIR). In the last two years, we asked the police to register it as robbery case, a senior police official said.

Another important factor in the escalated numbers was that firm instructions were given to all police stations not to resort to burking of cases. The detection of cases may be low but that did not stop us from registering every complaint of robbery irrespective of the quantum of loss suffered by the victim, the official said.
