Jamshedpur, Jan 2: In the midst of the ongoing strike by drivers, the city witnessed a surge of panic as rumors circulated about the sudden closure of petrol pumps. This led to large crowds congregating at various fuel stations across the city on Tuesday evening, eager to secure their fuel supply. The situation escalated to the point where even petrol pump staff expressed concern over the overwhelming number of people.

Hundreds of individuals flocked to most petrol pumps, resulting in skirmishes among anxious customers vying to purchase fuel. The rumor, suggesting limited oil stocks at the pumps, prompted people to rush to the nearest available petrol station to secure their fuel needs. Shivji Singh, from the Sakchi Bengal Club petrol pump, assured that pumps with their tanker facilities would remain unaffected by the ongoing strike. However, those reliant on external transporters for oil deliveries might face disruptions. He reassured the public of an ample stock of oil at his pump.

In the Ghatshila block area, the announcement of a three-day strike by the Jharkhand Driver Union on January 1 had an immediate impact on fuel prices, resulting in long queues at petrol pumps as residents sought to stock up on petrol. Apprehensions loom regarding the possible extension of the strike by drivers, which could lead to further increases in fuel and vegetable prices.

The ongoing strike by drivers stems from discontent with the recent amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act by the Central Government. Commencing from January 1, the three-day strike reflects drivers’ demands for the withdrawal of what they consider to be an unjust law imposed by the government. The situation has raised concerns about potential spikes in petrol and diesel prices, as well as impacts on the cost of essential commodities such as vegetables. (w/nm)
