Lok Sabha polls: Jharkhand Minority Commission demands monitoring of social media

Jamshedpur: The Jharkhand State Minority Commission team led by chairperson Kamal Khan, vice-president Gurdev Singh Raja, held a meeting with senior administrative officials of East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswan at the district collectorate in Jamshedpur and directed for close monitoring of the social media. The meeting was also attended by Ashok Sarangi, Gurvinder Singh Sethi and secretary Nesar Ahmed.

Addressing media, Khan said that the commission has directed the administration to strengthen their network and intelligence in order to keep a tab on contents on social media which might disturb social harmony in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls. The administrative officials have assured that instruction have already been issued to the respective cybercrime. A strict vigil is important to ensure that the polls are held free and fair, said Kamal Khan.

Directives were also issued to install CCTV cameras in communally sensitive areas and booths. The respective district administrations informed that CCTVs have been installed in most of the important roads in the city and now they are trying to install CCTV cameras in identified vulnerable locations having history of communal disturbances and also in polling booths wherever it is possible, said Khan.

The commission members also asked respective district administration to bolster the existing peace committees at the thana, block, sub-division and district level.

The General elections are an important event in the country and we want to ensure the safety and security of the candidates as well as the voters. The borders with Odisha and West Bengal should be sealed to ensure no untoward incident takes place, said an official.

The commission is working on initiating extensive and comprehensive measures to provide a peaceful atmosphere to the voters so that they turn up at the polling booths in large number and exercise their franchise without fear.

Jamshedpur has lost its then Parliamentarian Sunil Mahato to the bullets of naxalities in 2007 and even in the by-poll, that was held subsequently to fill the vacant seat, witnessed high security in and around the Maoist infested areas of all the blocks under Ghatsila sub-division.

“The safety and security of the political leaders along with the voters is indeed a serious matter that requires much attention during the elections and district administration is working in this direction,” informed a district administration official.
