Leader of Opposition post vacant as Jharkhand BJP delays decision

Ranchi: The post of Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha will remain vacant during its first session from December 9 to 12, as the BJP has yet to make a decision on appointing a legislative party leader. Despite the urgency, discussions on this topic have not been prioritized, reflecting the party’s cautious approach. A senior BJP leader confirmed that the organization is currently not in a position to take a decision, emphasizing that the focus remains on broader strategic planning, including a membership campaign. State BJP in-charge Laxmikant Bajpai is scheduled to arrive in Ranchi on December 8, a day before the session begins, but his agenda will primarily revolve around addressing the membership drive rather than legislative leadership.

The party is reportedly considering two names for the role: Babulal Marandi and C.P. Singh. However, the decision has been delayed for several reasons. Firstly, the BJP seeks to clarify its strategy for Jharkhand before finalizing any appointment. Secondly, the timing of the state president’s selection in February is influencing the leadership decision, as both roles need to be balanced strategically. Additionally, the party is also weighing caste considerations to ensure an equitable distribution of leadership roles.

Babulal Marandi recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, where they discussed key issues affecting Jharkhand and analysed the reasons for the BJP’s defeat in the last assembly elections. This follows a two-day review meeting in Ranchi led by National Organization General Secretary B.L. Santosh, where the central leadership deliberated on insights from the party’s performance review. These discussions indicate that the BJP is taking a methodical approach to address internal challenges and strengthen its position in the state.

The delay in selecting a legislative leader is reminiscent of the situation following the 2019 assembly elections when the BJP took months to decide on the Leader of Opposition. Initially, Babulal Marandi was chosen for the role, but the Speaker later recognized Amar Bauri. As the first session of the Vidhan Sabha approaches, the continued absence of a Leader of Opposition could affect the BJP’s ability to effectively challenge the government and fulfil its legislative responsibilities.
