IndiGo sees incredible opportunities ahead and will successfully navigate current industry challenges, Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh said on Monday.
Speaking at his first in-person media briefing since taking charge in August, Walsh strongly emphasized the airline’s relentless focus on maintaining an excellent cost base.
The airline expects to receive its first wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft starting in the second quarter of 2028, boosting its long-distance market presence.
Walsh expressed full confidence in the carrier’s growth trajectory, affirming that IndiGo possesses all the necessary ingredients to succeed in the competitive long-haul market.
Acknowledging that surging fuel prices are currently squeezing airline profitability across the aviation sector, Walsh reiterated IndiGo’s resilience in managing these operational pressures.
Higher global fuel costs and severe rupee depreciation heavily impacted the airline, leading to a net loss of Rs 1,879.1 crore in the September quarter.
In response to these financial headwinds, the carrier deliberately reduced its capacity during the quarter to maintain cost discipline across its network.
Walsh also highlighted the strategic importance of the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport, calling it a massive growth opportunity for the expanding airline.
He clarified that IndiGo’s strategic decision to partly shift international flights to the new hub directly serves the airline’s long-term commercial interests.
IndiGo currently operates over 2,100 daily flights worldwide and maintains a robust operational fleet comprising more than 400 modern aircraft.
