Kolhan University: Arts and Science Stream dropped at Workers College, Chaibasa Women’s College too drops Science

Jamshedpur: In a major overhaul of higher education under the New Education Policy (NEP), Kolhan University has introduced a cluster-based academic system that will reshape the course structure of several affiliated colleges from the upcoming academic session.

The decision, implemented following directives from the State Government, aims to optimise faculty resources and improve the quality of education. However, the move has also resulted in the discontinuation of several long-running traditional courses across colleges in Jamshedpur and Chaibasa.

Workers College to Offer Only Commerce Courses

Under the revised arrangement, Workers College will discontinue undergraduate courses in both Arts and Science streams. Beginning this academic session, the institution will function exclusively as a Commerce college.

The move marks a major transition for one of the city’s longstanding educational institutions, where Arts and Science education had been available for decades.

Science Education Halted at Chaibasa Women’s College

In another significant change, Chaibasa Women’s College will no longer offer Science courses. Following the restructuring, Science students in Chaibasa will now have to seek admission at Tata College, which will remain the only college in the town offering Science education at the undergraduate level.

G.C. Jain College Designated as Commerce Hub

As part of the cluster-based model, G.C. Jain College has been designated exclusively for Commerce studies. Consequently, Commerce courses will no longer be available at other colleges in Chaibasa.

University officials stated that subject-wise centralisation is expected to improve faculty deployment and infrastructure utilisation.

Geography and Geology Centralised at LBSM College

The university has also centralised the teaching of Geography and Geology at LBSM College under the new academic framework.

The administration believes that concentrating specialised subjects at selected institutions will help strengthen academic quality and laboratory support.

New Integrated and Skill-Based Courses Introduced

While several conventional streams are being phased out, the university has simultaneously announced the launch of a number of professional and creative programmes.

Students will now have the opportunity to pursue five-year integrated programmes combining graduation with professional qualifications such as B.Ed., B.P.Ed., and LL.B.

Additionally, subjects related to Drama and Theatre Studies will be introduced at Jamshedpur Co-operative College and LBSM College. New skill-oriented subjects, including Yoga, have also been added to the curriculum from the upcoming session.

Faculty Shortage Behind the Decision

According to university authorities, the restructuring has primarily been undertaken to address the shortage of qualified teachers in several colleges. Officials stated that many institutions lacked adequate faculty members for specific subjects, adversely affecting academic standards.

The cluster-based system, the administration claims, will ensure better resource management, improved teaching quality, and stronger academic specialisation across affiliated colleges.
