Thiruvananthapuram: Exit poll projections favouring the United Democratic Front (UDF) have energized the opposition in Kerala, while the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) remains sceptical of the forecasts. Although counting for the 140 Assembly seats takes place on Monday (May 4), the political temperature has spiked following the release of data from nine different agencies.
UDF Optimism and Seat Projections
The opposition camp currently radiates confidence as several major surveys project a significant victory.
- Projected Tally: Surveys suggest the UDF could cross 85 seats, with some estimates nearing or touching 90.
- Internal Assessment: Congress leaders align these projections with their own internal estimates of winning between 80 and 90 seats.
- Historical Parallels: Congress leader K. Muraleedharan compared the current mood to the 2014 general elections, where polls accurately predicted a change in government.
Left Pushes Back Against Anti-Incumbency
The LDF government has expressed unease as none of the nine exit polls explicitly predict their continuation in power.
- Confidence at the Top: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reportedly told ministers and officials that even a narrow majority will suffice for governance continuity.
- Denial of Anti-Incumbency: Veteran CPI(M) leader A.K. Balan argued there is no public sentiment against the government and questioned why the electorate would vote for change.
- Skepticism of Polls: Left leaders continue to downplay the results, citing historical instances where exit polls failed to match the final tally.
BJP and the Third Front
The BJP, which currently holds no seats in the outgoing Assembly, remains cautiously optimistic. Some estimates suggest the party could secure up to four seats, significantly improving its footprint in the state.
The polls shaping the current political discourse include data from Axis My India, Times Now-JVC, People’s Pulse, and P-MARQ, among others.
