Kolkata (IANS): The Election Commission of India (ECI) will decide this Thursday whether to grant the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) request for repolling in 77 booths across South 24 Parganas district. The demand follows the second phase of the Assembly elections held on April 29.
Concentration of Contested Booths
The BJP’s demand focuses heavily on the Diamond Harbour subdivision, which falls under the Lok Sabha constituency of Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. According to an insider from the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office, the 77 booths are distributed as follows:
- Falta Assembly Constituency: 32 booths.
- Diamond Harbour Assembly Constituency: 29 booths.
- Magrahat (Purba) Assembly Constituency: 13 booths.
- Budge Budge Assembly Constituency: 3 booths.
While the first three constituencies belong to the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat, Magrahat (Purba) falls under the Jaynagar Lok Sabha seat. Notably, no political party demanded repolling during the first phase of elections on April 23.
Controversies in Falta
The Falta constituency has remained a focal point of tension throughout the election cycle. Recent controversies include:
- EVM Tampering: On Wednesday, officials noticed that white tape covered the EVM buttons next to the BJP candidate’s name and symbol.
- Administrative Friction: Observers noted a heated exchange between ECI-appointed police observer Ajay Pal Sharma and Trinamool candidate Jahangir Khan.
The ECI sought an immediate report from the CEO’s office regarding these incidents and plans to finalize its decision regarding the repoll today.
