Kailash Gahlot’s resignation a major setback for AAP ahead of elections

The resignation of prominent Delhi Minister Kailash Gahlot from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and his ministerial post has dealt a significant blow to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal just before the assembly elections.

In his resignation, Gahlot raised serious concerns that could tarnish AAP’s image, including the government’s failure to clean the Yamuna River, which he claimed was in a worse condition than it had been earlier. He also criticized the party’s constant tussle with the central government, alleging that AAP spent more time in political disputes than addressing public issues.

While AAP may dismiss these remarks as influenced by pressure from agencies like the ED or CBI or label them as BJP propaganda, Gahlot’s statements reflect a widely recognized perception of AAP’s combative approach toward the central government. This ongoing friction has often left Delhi’s residents bearing the brunt of unresolved issues due to a lack of cooperation between the two governments.

Gahlot’s mention of the ₹45 crore expenditure on the renovation of Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence dubbed, ‘Sheeshmahal, had further harmed AAP’s anti-corruption image. Critics have long questioned the necessity of such expenses, and Gahlot’s allegations that the party had strayed from its founding principles amplified this criticism.

The future political impact of Gahlot’s departure remains uncertain, but his resignation has undoubtedly intensified scrutiny of AAP’s governance and its claims of pioneering a new kind of politics.
