JWQC Tata Steel creates culture of knowledge sharing: T V Narendran

Iron Making wins Deming Trophy, New Bar Mill bags Udpa Trophy

Jamshedpur, June 8: The Joint Works Quality Committee (JWQC), Tata Steel and Total Quality Management (TQM) department of Tata Steel jointly organised the JWQC Annual Recognition Function 2020-21 on June 7 at Fasy Auditorium, Loyola School to recognise the contributions of employees and departments in Small Group Activities (SGA), MASS and Daily Management.

Harishankar Singh, the Treasurer and Accountant, Tata Workers’ Union, and Chairperson JWQC welcomed the guests of honour and the awardees. TV Narendran, CEO and MD Tata Steel as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honours, Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union and Avneesh Gupta, VP TQM & E&P and Vice Chairperson JWQC presented the awards to 65+ teams.

TV Narendran, CEO and MD Tata Steel addressed the gathering and expressed his joy at being present in the physical award function after a gap of two years. He asserted that events like these demonstrate the benefit of cross-learning and creating a culture of knowledge sharing. He acknowledged the importance of this forum as it reflects the passion and commitment of the employees and highlights the consistent performance of Tata Steel.

He attributed Tata Steel’s success to the employees and congratulated the winners heartily along with acknowledging the support of the spouse of winners who were not present during the programme.

Sanjeev K. Choudhary, President, TWU, shared how the definition of quality has been constantly changing with time and customer needs. Through simple daily-life examples, he emphasised the benefit of methods like CAPA (Corrective Action Preventive Action), QA (Quality Assurance) and QC (quality control). He lauded the new initiative of 5S & Visual Workplace Management (VWM) recognition, for Best Performing Departments and their contribution to a safer and more efficient workplace. He motivated all participants by asserting that one’s mindset determines one’s achievement.

On this occasion, dignitaries also unveiled two books- Daily Management Workbook and the Best Improvement Cases from Shop Floor 2020-2021.

The Deming Trophy (Best Division in promoting improvement initiatives at the shop floor) was awarded to Iron Making while Udpa Trophy (Best Department in promoting improvement initiatives at the shop floor) was awarded to New Bar Mill. This year onwards, 5S & Visual Workplace Management (VWM) recognition for best performing departments, were also being made a part of JWQC function.

Avneesh Gupta thanked and congratulated all the dignitaries, participants and winners.
