Jamshedpur: Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) leaders and activists took out a massive torchlight procession from Agrico transport ground to Sakchi roundabout on Saturday in support of their demand for flyovers at various places in the city to provide relief to the people from daily traffic jams and road accidents.
Traffic at Sakchi, Sidhgora, Baridih and other city places was thrown out of gear due to the procession as a huge number of JVM activists participated in it. Sakchi main road was blocked for several hours in the impact.
The JVM leaders had earlier announced their decision to organize a torchlight procession today. A delegation of party members headed by central secretary Abhay Singh had met the deputy commissioner (DC) of East Singhbhum, Dr. Amitabh Kaushal and submitted a memorandum demanding improvement in the transport system of the city and construction of flyovers in order to decrease the road accidents and smooth driving in Jamshedpur.
Leading the agitation, Abhay Singh said the major problem which the city faced was road accidents. “According to the information we got from district administration according to RTI is that in the last 8 years more than 900 people have lost their life in road accidents.
Abhay Singh said the number of trucks and other heavy vehicles had gone up in the city in the last several years. Now the situation had worsened due to limited roads and space in the city. This calls for prompt measures to provide relief to the people by building more roads and flyovers in the city, he said.
The JVM leader went on to add that the people of the city wanted the district administration to do justice to them. He said the corporate houses should also understand their responsibility. He said party activists and senior leaders will continue the agitation for construction of flyovers in the city till their demands were fulfilled by the district administration.
