Jamshedpur Overhauls Sanitation with High-Tech Fleet

Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) will overhaul its waste management system starting this April. Seven new private agencies will take over the city’s sanitation responsibilities, utilizing state-of-the-art machinery and a fresh strategic approach. To support this upgrade, JNAC has increased its annual sanitation budget from ₹4 crore to approximately ₹6 crore.

A Three-Tier Monitoring System

The new structural framework divides the JNAC area into seven functional zones. A workforce of 400 Safai Mitras (sanitation workers) will manage ground operations. The deployment includes 100 workers in the East Zone (A & B), 60 in the Central Zone, 150 in the West Zone (A & B), and 60 in the Birsanagar Zone. Additionally, a specialized team of 30 workers will focus on government offices and residential colonies.

To ensure accountability, JNAC has implemented a three-tier reporting hierarchy:

  1. 15 Supervisors will directly monitor the Safai Mitras.
  2. Supervisors will report to City Managers.
  3. City Managers will report to the Special Officer/Deputy Municipal Commissioner.

High-Tech Solutions for Narrow Lanes

In a move to improve efficiency in congested areas, JNAC has added smaller, mechanized vehicles to its fleet. The upgraded arsenal includes 80 auto-tippers, 4 JCPs, 2 road-sweeping machines, and 2 super sucker machines. These agencies are responsible for more than just garbage collection; their duties include cleaning drains, cutting bushes, spraying bleaching powder, and removing animal carcasses.

Aiming for India’s #1 Spot

Currently ranked third nationally (in the 3–10 lakh population category) and first in Jharkhand, Jamshedpur holds a “Five-Star City” rating. With these high-tech upgrades, JNAC aims to clinch the top spot in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan (National Sanitation Survey).

Official Statement

“We are implementing this new system by dividing JNAC into seven zones. Citizens can report issues regarding door-to-door garbage collection directly to Supervisors, City Managers, or the Special Officer. Our goal is to make JNAC number one in the national cleanliness rankings,” said Krishna Kumar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, JNAC.
