Jamshedpur: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) observed Hul Diwas on Tuesday by paying floral tributes to tribal freedom fighters Sidhu and Kanhu at the party’s district liaison office in Jamshedpur. The event also saw the party launching a sharp attack on the Government over alleged restrictions on paying homage to the martyrs.
JMM East Singhbhum District President Victor Soren, while garlanding the statues and portraits of the martyrs, recalled the historic Santhal Hul of 1855 led by Sidhu-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phulo-Jhano against British rule. He said the movement had shaken the foundations of colonial administration and symbolised the struggle to protect Jal, Jungle, and Zameen (water, forests, and land).
Criticising the Union government, Soren said it was unfortunate that even after more than seven decades of independence, people were allegedly required to obtain administrative permission and sign bonds merely to pay tribute to their own freedom fighters. He said such practices raised serious questions about the functioning of democracy and warned that no government would succeed in erasing the legacy of the tribal heroes.
JMM ’20-Point Programme’ member Pramod Lal said Sidhu and Kanhu had fought a historic battle to protect the honour, rights, and dignity of the tribal community. He stressed that the progress of both society and the state depended on following the ideals of the martyrs and urged young people to draw inspiration from the Hul movement and its sacrifices.
Several party office-bearers, leaders, and workers attended the programme, offered floral tributes to the martyrs, and reaffirmed their commitment to uphold the ideals of Sidhu and Kanhu.
