Jamshedpur: Launching a scathing attack on the Jharkhand government and local police, BJP State Vice President and former MLA Bhanu Pratap Shahi stated on Tuesday that the rule of law has completely collapsed in Jamshedpur. He added that criminals have become so bold that they are killing people right in front of the police.
Shahi made these remarks during a high-profile press conference organized by the BJP Jamshedpur Urban District unit at its Sakchi office to address the city’s deteriorating law and order situation, rising crime rate, and administrative failure.
“A Murder Committed Under Police Protection”
Shahi alleged that Jamshedpur has transformed into a safe haven for criminals under the current regime. He categorized the recent killing of Himanshu Singh outside a pub in Bistupur not as an isolated incident, but as a heinous crime taking place under direct police protection.
“Attackers dragged a youth right next to a police vehicle and stabbed him to death,” Shahi stated. “This proves that criminals no longer fear the law. The police officers and jawans standing silently at the spot are just as guilty as the criminals who wielded the knives.”
The BJP leader demanded a speedy trial and the death penalty for all suspects involved in the attack. He also demanded that the state government register a murder case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code against the police personnel visible in the CCTV footage for failing to act.
Shahi noted that while another youth, Pratyush Kumar, continues to battle for his life in a hospital, the insensitivity of the police administration has shocked the city. He alleged that authorities failed to provide timely security and medical aid, costing a promising youth his life.
Police Extortion Racket Blamed for Crime Surge
Shahi claimed that over the past three to four months, Jamshedpur has seen an unprecedented spike in murders, stabbings, armed robberies, and chain-snatching.
Shahi alleged that instead of protecting citizens, the police administration focuses its manpower on extorting crores of rupees daily under the guise of vehicle checking drives.
Out of a sanctioned strength of 2,800 police personnel in Jamshedpur, only 1,600 jawans are currently active. Shockingly, the department deploys over 500 of these active jawans daily for traffic checks—a task that automated CCTV and online e-challan systems could easily handle.
BJP Warns of Mass Agitations and Jamshedpur Bandh
Shahi warned that if the government fails to deliver swift justice for Himanshu Singh and his grieving family, the BJP will launch a massive agitation from the streets to the Assembly, including a call for a total Jamshedpur Bandh if necessary.
Adding to the criticism, Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Sahu stated that the state government has failed in its primary duty to protect its citizens. “Jamshedpur was once famous across India as a clean, green, and peaceful city,” MLA Sahu noted. “Today, an atmosphere of fear and crime tarnishes that identity. We are seeing a terrifying trend where even school children are caught carrying sharp weapons and country-made pistols into classrooms.”
