Jharkhand: Tomatoes, green chillies price soar

Ranchi, June 30: As the monsoon brings relief from scorching temperatures, the price of essential vegetables has surged significantly across the region, burdening consumers’ wallets.

Tomato and green chilli prices have witnessed a steep hike in many parts of the state, causing concern among residents. In Deoghar, green chillies are being sold at a staggering rate of Rs 250 per kg, while tomato prices have soared to Rs 120 per kg. Even coriander leaves, known for enhancing the flavor of dishes, have refused to come down below Rs 100 per kg.

The adverse weather conditions, particularly the impact of the monsoon, have adversely affected tomato and chilli crops in various areas of the state. Reduced production and spoilage in the fields have directly influenced the market, leading to a shortage in supply and subsequently, increased prices.

However, there is hope that the situation may improve in the coming days as the rains are expected to boost vegetable production during the Kharif season. It is anticipated that with time, the prices may stabilize and gradually decline.

The heavy rainfall has saturated the fields, directly impacting crop growth and quality. As a result, tomatoes are being sold at Rs 120 per kg in the capital city of Ranchi. Other vegetables, such as radish, cauliflower, parwal, bodi, nanua, brinjal, banana, pumpkin, bhindi, and bitter gourd, are also witnessing inflated prices, ranging from Rs 40 to Rs 80 per kg. Ginger prices have reached Rs 300 to Rs 400 per kg, further straining household budgets. Merchants and consumers alike are feeling the pinch of these exorbitant prices. Just four days ago, tomatoes were available at Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg, but now their cost has more than doubled. Mohan Yadav, a homeowner, expressed his frustration, stating, “We are finding tomatoes in the market at Rs 90 to 100 per kg.”
