Jamshedpur : Jharkhand State will soon see not only one but four Eye Bank getting operational. Thanks to the initiative of the State Government and the constant knocking by Rajnish Kumar, National Executive Member, Eye Bank Association of India with State Blindness Control Officer and other officials related to National Health Mission.
Jharkhand annual collection of Cornea is merely twenty as against seven thousand collected annually by States like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh. Majority of its comes from Jamshedpur where Roshni is working her and promotion the cause for more than two decades. There are merely 1.1 Million Corneal Blind in India out of which majority are Children.
All the three State run Medical colleges Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College and Hospital in Jamshedpur, Patliputra Medical College & Hospital in Danbad, Rajendra Institute of Medical Science in Ranchi and Bokaro Steel Plant Hospital will soon have an Eye Bank.
Officials from State Blindness Control under National Programme for Control of Blindness will soon make a visit to all these four places to identify the location, apparatus and equipment needed for operating an Eye Bank. Plan is to have an Eye Donation Counsellor placed in each Eye Bank to promote Eye Donation and counsel the family of the deceased to come for ward for the good cause.
It has been observed that more almost 40% Eye Donation in India comes from Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programmewhich provide an opportunity for making a sensitive timely request for Eye Donation to relatives of deceased patients and also helps in organising for quick convenient enucleation if consent is received.
