Jamshedpur: The Jharkhand High Court has reserved its decision in the high-profile case of Deepak Kumar, convicted of murdering his wife, two daughters, and a tuition teacher in 2021. The court heard criminal appeals filed by the convict challenging his death sentence and by the state government seeking confirmation of the punishment. The hearing was presided over by a division bench of Justice Rangan Mukhopadhyay and Justice Arun Kumar Rai.
The gruesome incident came to light on April 12, 2021, when four bodies were discovered at Quarter No. 97/99 on Teesta Road in the Kadma police station area. The victims were identified as Deepak Kumar’s wife Bina Kumari, daughters Diya and Sandhi Kumari, and teacher Rinki Ghosh. After committing the murders, Deepak fled to Rourkela and then Dhanbad, where he was arrested while withdrawing money from an ATM.
“Justice will prevail in this case,” a legal expert commented, acknowledging the significance of the judgment. The Jamshedpur lower court had previously sentenced Deepak Kumar to death on April 6, 2023, after testimony from 25 prosecution witnesses. The reserved decision is awaited with keen public interest.
