Ranchi, July 1: The Jharkhand High Court has intervened in a concerning incident at the Genetic Super-Specialty Hospital in Bariatu, Ranchi, where a woman named Sangeeta Kumari was allegedly held hostage over unpaid medical bills. The court has summoned the Health Secretary to appear on July 18 to explain how such a situation could occur under government oversight.
The High Court, presided over by Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice AK Rai, directed the government to present details about all hospitals in Ranchi district, including their infrastructure, basic facilities, and fire safety provisions. This directive comes in response to growing complaints of irregularities in the treatment and billing processes under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana at private hospitals across Jharkhand.
The incident involving Sangeeta Kumari, a resident of Torpa, Khunti, has sparked outrage. Her husband, Mangalu Singh, a MNREGA laborer, claimed to have paid Rs 2.60 lakh towards the hospital bill but was allegedly harassed for an additional Rs 1.60 lakh which he couldn’t afford.
