Heatwave: Daltonganj Hits 42.6°C, Jamshedpur Breaches 40°C

Jamshedpur: Intense heat gripped Jharkhand on Wednesday as temperatures surged across the state. Daltonganj recorded a searing 42.6°C, the highest of the season so far. The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi bulletin confirmed a steady build-up of heat, with most districts reporting above-normal temperatures and no signs of immediate relief.

Jamshedpur joined the list of sweltering cities as the mercury climbed to 40.2°C, significantly increasing discomfort for residents. While Ranchi remained relatively milder at 37.8°C, Bokaro reached 38.2°C. Consistent warming patterns across the region reflected widespread positive departures from normal temperatures.

Night temperatures offered limited respite. Jamshedpur stayed warm at 24.4°C, though Ranchi and Daltonganj recorded cooler lows of 19.9°C and 19.1°C, respectively. However, the lack of cloud cover and rainfall allowed heat to accumulate steadily throughout the day.

Automated Weather Station data reinforced the severity of the situation. Seraikela touched 40.6°C, Palamu hit 40.3°C, and districts like Godda, Pakur, and Hazaribagh hovered near 39°C, showing that heat stress has spread beyond isolated pockets.

The emerging pattern suggests heatwave conditions are taking shape over western and southern Jharkhand. The sharp spike in Daltonganj—three degrees above normal—highlights the intensity of this spell.

“The heat has intensified suddenly over the past few days. Even evenings feel uncomfortable now,” noted a Jamshedpur resident. Ranchi locals echoed these concerns, noting that the heat lingers well into the night despite the lack of a breeze.

With weather conditions remaining dry, officials expect the heat spell to persist. They advise citizens to avoid prolonged sun exposure, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions as temperatures continue to hover above normal levels.
