Protest at Tata Motors Jamshedpur Ends After 30-Hour Standoff

Jamshedpur: Terminated employees and social activist Bunty Singh ended their protest at the Tata Motors plant gate after nearly 30 hours following intervention from labor authorities. The District Labour Commissioner (DLC) personally visited the site to negotiate with the agitators. He provided a written assurance that the department would examine their demands and take appropriate action.

Based on this assurance, the protesters agreed to call off the agitation.

However, while addressing the gathering, Bunty Singh issued a stern warning. He stated that the movement would intensify if the company failed to resolve their demands within 30 days. He cautioned that the next phase of the protest would take a more aggressive turn, potentially including a blockade of all company entry gates.

The protesters raised several key demands during the sit-in:

  • An end to the alleged harassment of workers under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).

  • The resumption of apprenticeship programs.

  • The absorption of TMST recruits into the Tata Motors payroll, including diploma training and job guarantees.

  • Permanent employment opportunities for second-source workers.

  • Timely settlements (within three months) for families of deceased employees and a job for one family member.

  • The reinstatement of workers allegedly terminated on false charges.

  • Fair and transparent elections for the Tata Motors Workers’ Union.

During the conclusion of the protest, a young woman also approached Bunty Singh to share her grievances. Responding to her concerns, he reiterated that the movement would expand further with administrative intervention if no concrete steps occur within the stipulated timeframe.
