Jharkhand HC directs ED and others to respond in PIL for speedy trial of MP-MLA criminal cases

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court, under the division bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Justice Anand Sen, addressed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the expeditious trial of criminal cases registered against Members of Parliament (MP) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLA). The court heard the applicant’s side, represented by advocate Abhishek Krishna Gupta, who filed a complaint against former Chief Minister Madhu Koda, former minister Bhanu Pratap Shahi, and former minister Kamlesh Kumar Singh.

The petitioner, Durga Munda, sought a prompt trial against public representatives and other individuals accused of corruption, citing disproportionate assets acquired by them during their tenure. In response to the applicant’s plea, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and other defendants were directed to submit their replies.

The PIL, filed on suo motu cognizance, also addresses cases involving MLA Dhulu Mahato and alleges the acquisition of assets beyond his income. Notably, the High Court has ordered a collective hearing of all related petitions. The next hearing for this case is scheduled for January 2024, highlighting the ongoing efforts to ensure a swift and fair legal process for cases involving public representatives.
