Rising Elephant deaths spark outrage across Jharkhand forests

Jharkhand witnessed another elephant death on Wednesday after villagers discovered a carcass in West Singhbhum district.
Residents spotted the dead animal in a field near Tankura village under the Barajamda outpost area.
A herd of around 20 elephants entered the settlement on Tuesday evening.
Villagers claimed they informed the Forest Department immediately but received no help.
Residents spent the entire night driving the wild herd away from their homes.
They found the dead elephant in the field the next morning.
Locals suspect electrocution killed the animal, though officials await the post-mortem report.
Angry villagers questioned the department’s negligence and demanded a full investigation.
This incident marks the fourth elephant death in the state within two months.
On October 28, officials found a dead elephant in Latehar district’s Bishunpur forest.
Ranger Nand Kumar Mahato led an inquiry and suspected a fight between elephants caused that death.
Earlier in October, villagers found a dead female elephant in Jagannathpur with missing tusks.
That discovery sparked serious poaching suspicions among local authorities and residents.
Records show seven elephant deaths in the West Singhbhum region over the past year.
On September 7, another elephant died from electrocution in Latehar’s Komar village.
That animal touched electrified fencing while searching for food near agricultural fields.
Elephant movement through forest-adjacent villages has increased rapidly across Jharkhand in recent months.
Desperate residents frequently install illegal high-voltage electric fencing to protect crops and property.
Forest officials continue to investigate the rising number of human-wildlife conflicts and animal casualties state-wide.
