Jharkhand Elections: Defying all speculations Hemant Soren is back with a bang

Jamshedpur: Defying all predictions, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, buoyed by the popularity of his wife Kalpana Soren and the success of his welfare schemes, achieved a resounding victory in the Jharkhand Assembly elections. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) delivered its best performance yet, leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) grappling for answers.

Despite deploying a formidable election machinery led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP failed to regain the trust of the people, particularly the tribal population. Having addressed the issues that led to the ousting of the Raghubar Das government in 2019, the saffron brigade hoped for redemption but found itself unable to resonate with voters.

The BJP’s slogan “Roti-Mati-Beti,” aimed at highlighting Bangladeshi infiltration, failed to strike a chord. Tribal voters, a key demographic in Jharkhand, appeared unconvinced by the BJP’s rhetoric. Analysts believe this issue lacked relevance for the majority of voters who prioritized tangible welfare measures over divisive narratives.

The enthusiastic participation of women voters proved pivotal in this election. Programs like the “Maiyaan Samman Yojana”—an initiative providing direct benefits to women—found greater appeal than the BJP’s counterproposal of the “Gogo Didi Yojana.” Kalpana Soren’s relentless campaign efforts, coupled with her personal charisma, translated into trust among women voters who viewed her as a harbinger of change.

“The crowds at her rallies weren’t just symbolic. They reflected genuine trust in her vision for a better future,” remarked a political observer.

This election reaffirmed the JMM’s transformation from a predominantly tribal-centric party to a broader political entity capable of appealing to non-tribal voters. Traditionally securing 20-22 seats, the JMM’s expanded reach broke new ground, capturing constituencies where the BJP or its ally, the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), once held sway.

“The credit for this victory goes to Hemant Soren,” said a political analyst. “Had the JMM contested more seats, it could have delivered an even stronger performance.”

Unexpectedly, the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also fared well, securing seats in rural strongholds. Their resurgence further dented the BJP’s prospects. Meanwhile, smaller parties like Jairam Mahto’s Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) and Sudesh Mahto’s AJSU struggled to make an impact. Internal rivalries among Kurmi voters eroded their support base, indirectly affecting the BJP’s tally.

Several factors contributed to the BJP’s poor performance. The party’s polarizing rhetoric, including comments like “Batenge toh Katenge” and “Ek hain toh Safe hain,” did not resonate with voters. Issues of local governance overshadowed national-level narratives, signaling a clear distinction in voter preferences between Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

The results revealed a key pattern: in the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the central figure, the BJP’s electoral appeal diminishes. While Jharkhand delivered nine of 14 Lok Sabha seats to the BJP just months ago, the Assembly election highlighted the importance of strong local leadership. The BJP’s failure to project a chief ministerial candidate further weakened its campaign.

The BJP’s reliance on central leaders like Chouhan and Sarma sidelined its state cadre, drawing criticism from opponents. The JMM capitalized on this, mocking the BJP’s leadership as “real ghuspaithiyas” (infiltrators) who overshadowed local leaders.
