Ghatshila, Oct 24: The electoral battle in Ghatshila is heating up as BJP introduces a new contender, Babulal Soren, to challenge the sitting JMM candidate, Water Resources Minister Ramdas Soren. This assembly seat has historically witnessed intense competition, and the 2024 elections are no exception.

Babulal Soren, son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren, is contesting elections for the first time. His opponent, Ramdas Soren, has fought in five previous elections, winning twice. Ghatshila, a Santhal-dominated area, sees both candidates hailing from the same tribal community, which ensures a tight race with the Santhal vote likely to split between them.

In 2014, BJP’s Laxman Tudu narrowly defeated Ramdas Soren by 6,403 votes. However, in 2019, Ramdas reclaimed victory by defeating BJP’s Lakhanchandra Mardi by a margin of 7,724 votes. The constituency has a history of close contests, with the margin of victory often hovering between 5,000 and 8,000 votes. Notably, in 2009, Ramdas Soren won by just 192 votes against Congress candidate Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu, underscoring the highly competitive nature of elections in Ghatshila.

This time, with Babulal Soren’s candidacy, backed by his father Champai Soren’s influence, the BJP hopes to secure a win. Meanwhile, JMM is deploying its top leaders, including Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Kalpana Soren, to campaign vigorously for Ramdas. The outcome of this election may also hinge on the significant number of women voters in the constituency. Ghatshila has 1,26,649 female voters, outnumbering male voters, and their support has historically decided the winner in previous elections.

Despite Ramdas Soren’s experience and familiarity with the constituency, he faces challenges due to anti-incumbency sentiments and limited time to deliver results as a minister. Babulal Soren, though a political newcomer, benefits from his father’s reputation and backing. However, his lack of experience and previous controversies may affect his campaign.

With a total of 2,49,215 voters, Ghatshila is once again set for a fierce contest, and the results are expected to be determined by a small margin, as has been the trend in past elections.
