Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren mourns death of hockey coach Pratima Barwa

Ranchi, June 1: The sports fraternity in Jharkhand is grieving the untimely demise of renowned hockey coach Pratima Barwa. Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed his condolences on social media, calling her an ideal for the hardworking daughters of Jharkhand.

“Pratima Barwa, who gave Jharkhand and India many talented international hockey players, passed away suddenly after a struggle with paralysis. Her death is an irreparable loss to the hockey world of Jharkhand and the country,” CM Soren wrote. He prayed for peace for her soul and strength for her bereaved family.

Pratima Barwa was the head coach at the residential hockey training centre in Khunti and played a pivotal role in bringing national and international recognition to Jharkhand’s women hockey. She previously coached in Simdega, mentoring many players who rose to international fame.

Her protégés include Arjuna Award winner Salima Tete, along with Sangita Kumari, Beauty Dungdung, Deepika Soreng, Rajni Kerketta and Sushma Kumari, all of whom have made significant marks in hockey.
